We all know that Honey is the dessert princess, so you can imagine how I had to rack my brains to find the perfect birthday cake. After a lot of online research and considering Sydney’s 10 best patisseries, I chose La Gerbe D’or.
Out of this amazing list, why did I choose La Gerbe D’or? I needed my chosen bakery to have good pastries, great cakes and ideally be conveniently located near the city. So I rang around for opening times and to have a chat with the establishments, and La Gerbe D’or stood out in their over-the-phone service!
When I’m ‘shopping’ around, I tend to ask alot of questions… “What time do you open? Do you have pain au chocolat? What pastries do you specialise in? Do you have enough sitting space? What time is your busy period on Saturday? What can you recommend to make a birthday cake special?” I can be a real pain… but Deborah and Miriam answered all my questions and were more than helpful in helping me put together a selection of their best pastries for Honey’s birthday cake! I love great service and decided that La Gerbe D’or was the bakery that was going to be the one! It was also pure coincidence and luck that it was on the same street, and a couple of minutes walk away from L’Étoile, where we had lunch.
After lunch, M, S and I pretended to be too full (ok we were full) and keen to explore the cafes around Paddington. We “stumbled” upon La Gerbe D’or and proceeded to order our coffee and teas. I casually asked for my order, brought it to the table. I was very pleased with the arrangement of the cakes and pastries. Miriam and Deborah even made a special box to hold the selection of pastries. So when Honey opened the box, all the slices of cake were perfectly arranged. We had:
Honey and I agreed on some of our favourites: the ganache cake, strawberry tart and strawberry millefeuille. I also loved the citron tart as I felt that it had just the right amount of citrusy sourness, however, Honey felt that it was too ‘eggy’ for her.
Honey also loved the Opera cake as the combination of almond biscuit (jaconde), ganache and coffee butter cream went really well, and the layers were so even and perfect!
The team at La Gerbe D’or also had another special surprise for Honey. A cute little crème brulée with birthday candles!
We had the best teas at La Gerbe D’or too! It comes served in a super massive pot and is super strong (they use loose tea leaves). Honey and I drank lots of tea that day with our addition of honey and soy milk. Overall, given the selection of pastries, and the fact that you could taste the good quality ingredients used, plus the lovely staff that went out of their way to make Honey‘s day special, I would highly rate La Gerbe D’or as one the best patisseries that we have been to. The fact that they have excellent customer service makes me want to keep going back!
